Star Wars: Visions Presents — The Ninth Jedi has arrived — a full eight-episode anime series from Production I.G, the studio behind Ghost in the Shell.

The story originally began as a single short film in the Star Wars: Visions anthology, but it resonated with viewers so strongly that it has now grown into a series of its own.

At the center of the story is Kara, a Jedi apprentice and the daughter of the last known lightsaber craftsman. Together with a small group of aspiring Jedi, she sets out to find her father and stand against the hunters determined to wipe out the final followers of the Force.

But the most interesting part is something else.

While live-action Star Wars films and series have spent years circling around the Skywalkers, the Empire, and familiar characters, Japanese studios were given the freedom to treat this universe as a myth — creating new eras, different rules, and their own interpretations of what it means to be a Jedi.

Perhaps the future of Star Wars does not lie in bringing back old heroes once again, but in stories like this.
