The Legend of Dragoon — A Dream Still Waiting to Come True

Some games simply remain a product of their time.

And then there is The Legend of Dragoon.

For me, it is one of those rare childhood games that is impossible to forget. And honestly, I would not want to.

Dragons. Dragoons. Transformations. The signature Additions system, where every attack asked you to time your button presses and actually finish the combo yourself. A massive journey, an ambitious story spread across four discs, and the feeling of being part of a truly epic adventure that, back then, seemed almost endless.

The Legend of Dragoon was never just another faceless JRPG from the original PlayStation era.

It had its own world, its own mythology, a combat system with a clear identity, and one incredibly strong idea: the heroes did not simply unlock another magical ability — they became Dragoons, warriors who wielded the power of dragons.

Of course, plenty of things have aged. Some battles are slow, loading times are long, animations show their age, some of the dialogue can feel clunky, and there are limitations that were completely normal for a game of its era.

But even after more than a quarter of a century, the things that make you want to return to it have not really aged at all: its world, its atmosphere, its characters and their relationships, its unusual combat system, and that feeling of setting out on a genuinely grand adventure.

We now live in an era where games like Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and countless other classics are being brought back for new generations.

And The Legend of Dragoon is still somewhere back there, trapped in the era of the original PlayStation.

The strange thing is, this is one of those rare games where a remake would not even need to reinvent the original.

Keep the turn-based combat. Maybe take a few lessons from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Expand the Additions system. Make Dragoon transformations truly spectacular. Rebuild its towns and locations in modern 3D. Give the characters more dialogue and more time with one another. Dive deeper into the ancient history of its world and the events of ages long past.

And most importantly, do not turn it into yet another action game simply because that is what modern games are expected to be.

All The Legend of Dragoon really needs is the chance to become a modern version of itself.

If Sony ever decides to remake The Legend of Dragoon — and I genuinely hope it does — what would you want them to change, and what should they absolutely leave untouched?
